When to Place Your Custom Stationery Order

I know what you might be thinking, "What do you mean when to place my custom stationery order?"

Believe it or not, you need to know your timeline before ordering custom stationery just just like you would your wedding invitations! The process can take longer (or shorter!) than you might think, so it's good to have an idea ahead of time what you can expect, that way you aren't rushed later!

The Factors

Design Time

Depending on what type of stationery you're looking to have made, it may take more or less design time. For example, a trifold birthday invitation featuring a timeline of major moments from your baby's first year will take longer to design than an A6 notecard with your name at the top.

There's no set rule to how long any design is guaranteed to take, and often it depends on what other projects your stationer already has on their docket. You should be prepared for a complex project to take several weeks, where a simpler project may be able to be designed in the matter of days.

Also keep in mind if you are ordering something that requires special product sourcing (such as ribbon, stamps, or paper) this can add time to your order timeline!

The Proofing Process

Part of the timeline is also in your hands, not just your designers!

Depending on how long it takes you to respond to emails, make revisions to and accept your proofs, the design process timeline can change.

Want to make the process as short as possible? Be sure to respond to your stationer's calls and emails as quickly as possible, while also being as direct and clear with your vision as you can!

The Print Process

One of the biggest factors when figuring out your custom order timeline is deciding on your print process. Once your design has been completed and is approved, production time can vary greatly.

Digital Printing tends to have a much quicker turn around time for production - one to two weeks - where letterpress or foil may take several weeks longer.

I'll go into more detail about the differences in printing processes in another post, but you should be aware that they can vary greatly in production time!

The Takeaway

At the end of the day, the best way to know your custom stationery timeline is to communicate directly with your stationer. She'll be able to give you a more accurate time quote based on what you are looking for and what print process you'd like.

I recommend reaching out to your stationery designer as soon as you know you will need a design or up to three months* before you need your project in-hand, that way you can make sure to be on their client roster.

Overall, the custom stationery process can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months and you don't want to be asking for your bespoke design too late!
